OUR STORY

Meet the Ban's!

From left to right:
Emmett, Anna, Q, Austin, Stacy, Mike

Wild Plains Yaks is a family-owned ranch located in Elbert, Colorado, dedicated to raising healthy, grass-fed yak meat with exceptional care. What started as a curiosity quickly became a passion, and today our ranch is home to over 150 Tibetan yaks grazing on open Colorado pasture.

We believe great meat begins long before harvest. Our animals are raised with respect, plenty of space to roam, fresh spring water, and a natural grass diet. This commitment to sustainable yak farming produces premium yak meat known for its rich flavor, tenderness, and lean nutrition.

In addition to our premium grass-fed yak meat, we offer breeding stock, quarter, half, and whole yaks, raw hides, and seasonal fiber. Whether you're purchasing a few pounds of our 95/5 ground for your family or you’re a partnering restaurant or retailer, we are committed to providing honest service and exceptional quality every time.

We love sharing our ranch with others and helping more people discover one of the healthiest and most unique meats available.

EVERY DETAIL COUNTS.

"WHERE ARE YOUR YAKS PROCESSED?"

Every animal is professionally processed at Westcliffe Meats, a USDA-certified and inspected processing facility in Westcliffe, Colorado. Their experienced team ensures that each animal, including IYAK registered yaks, is handled with care and processed to the highest standards of quality, cleanliness, and food safety protocols. This commitment allows us to provide premium, professionally packaged grass-fed yak meat that you can purchase with confidence, knowing every cut has been prepared under strict USDA inspection standards, all while supporting sustainable yak farming practices.

honoring the yak bloodline

Our starter herd is registered with the International Yak Association (IYAK), an important part of our commitment to maintaining strong, healthy, and pure yak genetics. Yaks originated in the rugged, high-altitude regions of Central Asia, including Tibet, Nepal, and Mongolia, where their remarkable hardiness and adaptability developed over generations.

Maintaining pure yak bloodlines in the United States requires thoughtful breeding, careful recordkeeping, and a strong understanding of lineage. As the domestic yak population continues to grow, preserving traceable genetics and avoiding crossbreeding has become increasingly important. By beginning with registered animals and carefully selecting the breeding stock that shapes our herd, we work to preserve the natural characteristics, strength, hardiness, and exceptional genetics that make yaks such a unique breed.

Our goal is not simply to grow our herd, but to protect the integrity of the breed and produce healthy, quality animals whose genetics can be confidently traced for generations to come.
